MARCH MEETING REPORT
09 Mar 2020
Claire welcomed members and announced the recent death of Margaret Geldart who had been a WI member for many years. She went on to give the result of the Resolution vote. “An end to modern slavery” gained the most votes. We were updated on the village’s plans for the Tour de Yorkshire and VE day celebrations. A craft group is to be formed. The first meeting is on March 20 and an outing to Piece Hall is planned for Thursday, June 11. A number of invitations have been received from other WI’s and we were given information about WI and other village activities.
We were treated to a most informative talk by Jacqui and Peter Morrell from Happy Hedgehogs. We thought we knew something about these welcome garden visitors but our knowledge was greatly increased by the talk. Some of the information about the injuries they suffer before being brought to Jacqui’s sanctuary was horrifying but they are the lucky ones, living in her garden room and being nursed back to health. Hedgehog numbers in the 1950s totalled 36 million. They are now down to less than 1 million and extinction looms in about 10 years. A very sobering thought. We were given information about how we can help increase the number of hedgehogs and support the tireless, voluntary work of Happy Hedgehogs whose dedication to the cause is admirable.
