Verge cutting by the Parish Council
Pippa Manson - 24 Jun 2020
Just to let everyone know that the Parish Council's grass cutting is still delayed. Last week our contractor was self isolating. Now the wet weather is slowing progress. We expect a cut next week from Monday 6 July.
We are, as we have explained on notices around the village, growing some other verges long. This is a long term project. These verges will be cut in late summer, the grass removed and we will then sow a range of flowers including Yellow Rattle which, as a parasitic plant, should take some of the vigour out of the grasses. We hope in the next year or two that less grass and more wild flowers will grow in these areas. These should make these verges more interesting and will support a greater range of insect life.
Other verges in Kirkby are mown by Harrogate BC. These areas include the Green and Mowbray Crescent. As residents in these areas will know, this year Harrogate have not been mowing with their usual regularity. This has been due to redeployment of staff to other duties because of the Covid emergency. We expect that Harrogate BC will be regularly mowing from now on.
